Waist Size: Healthy Range for Indian Men and Women
What is a healthy waist size for Indians? Indian expert guidance treats a waist of 90 cm (about 35.4 inches) or more in men and 80 cm (about 31.5 inches) or more in women as abdominal obesity. Those cut-offs are lower than the ones often quoted from Western sources, because Indians tend to carry more fat around the middle at the same weight. A second check that works for everyone is simpler still: keep your waist to less than half your height.
This guide gives you both numbers, a ready table in inches, the honest answer to “is a 34 waist fat?”, and the correct way to measure, which is not the number on your jeans.
The Indian Waist Cut-Offs
Several bodies have set waist cut-offs for South Asians, and they agree on the same numbers.
| Source | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Indian obesity definition, revised 2025 (Misra et al., India Obesity Commission) | 90 cm or more | 80 cm or more |
| International Diabetes Federation, ethnic-specific values for South Asians | 90 cm or more | 80 cm or more |
| Same cut-off in inches (approx.) | 35.4 in | 31.5 in |
The 2025 Indian definition, published in Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews, calls waist circumference the best measure of abdominal obesity and adds that the waist-to-height ratio may also be useful, with a cut-off above 0.5. It also makes waist or waist-to-height ratio part of how stage 2 obesity is identified in Indians, alongside a BMI above 23. The IDF’s South Asian values, set out in its 2005 metabolic syndrome definition, are summarised in the Medical Journal of Australia.
How common is a waist above these lines? The ICMR-INDIAB national study of about 113,000 adults estimated abdominal obesity at 39.5%. In other words, roughly two in five Indian adults are already above the line.
Waist-to-Height Ratio: The Half-Your-Height Rule
A fixed waist number ignores height. A 34-inch waist means something different on a 5-foot woman than on a 6-foot man. The waist-to-height ratio fixes that: divide your waist by your height, in the same units.
The UK’s NICE guideline classifies it like this for adults with a BMI under 35, of both sexes and all ethnicities:
| Waist-to-height ratio | NICE classification |
|---|---|
| 0.40 to 0.49 | Healthy central adiposity, no increased health risk |
| 0.50 to 0.59 | Increased central adiposity, increased health risks |
| 0.60 or more | High central adiposity, further increased health risks |
The risks NICE names are type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Its message for the public is simple: try to keep your waist to less than half your height.
Healthy Waist Size by Height (Quick Table)
Here is the waist that equals half your height, which is the top of the healthy band. Below this number is where you want to be.
| Height | Waist at ratio 0.5 (cm) | Waist at ratio 0.5 (inches) |
|---|---|---|
| 150 cm (4 ft 11 in) | 75 cm | 29.5 in |
| 155 cm (5 ft 1 in) | 77.5 cm | 30.5 in |
| 160 cm (5 ft 3 in) | 80 cm | 31.5 in |
| 165 cm (5 ft 5 in) | 82.5 cm | 32.5 in |
| 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) | 85 cm | 33.5 in |
| 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) | 87.5 cm | 34.4 in |
| 180 cm (5 ft 11 in) | 90 cm | 35.4 in |
Notice that for many Indian women, half their height lands close to the 80 cm cut-off, and for taller men half their height lands close to 90 cm. The two checks usually point the same way. Where they disagree, take the stricter one seriously and talk to your doctor.
Is a 34 Waist Fat? Worked Answers
These are the questions people actually type. All conversions use 1 inch = 2.54 cm.
- Is a 34-inch waist fat for a woman? 34 inches is about 86 cm, which is above the 80 cm cut-off for Indian women. At 5 ft 3 in, the waist-to-height ratio is about 0.54, in NICE’s increased-risk band. It does not mean you are unhealthy, but it is a sign worth acting on.
- Is a 32-inch waist fat for a woman? About 81 cm, just over the 80 cm line. At 5 ft 3 in the ratio is about 0.51, right on the edge.
- Is a 30-inch waist fat for a woman? About 76 cm, under the cut-off. At 5 ft 3 in the ratio is about 0.48, in the healthy band.
- Is a 34-inch waist fat for a man? About 86 cm, under the 90 cm cut-off for Indian men. At 5 ft 7 in the ratio is about 0.51, just over half your height; at 5 ft 10 in it is about 0.49.
- Is a 36-inch waist fat for a man? About 91 cm, over the 90 cm cut-off. At 5 ft 7 in the ratio is about 0.54.
- Is a 38-inch waist fat for a man? About 97 cm. At 5 ft 7 in the ratio is about 0.57, the same example NICE uses in its own guidance.
One important catch: these answers assume a tape measurement at the right spot. Your trouser size is not the same thing.
Average Waist Size in India
We looked for a reliable national average and could not find one. India’s National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) did measure waists, but the main analysis of that data, published in The Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia, reports how many people are above a cut-off rather than an average size.
Using a waist above 80 cm for women and above 94 cm for men, it found abdominal obesity in 39.6% of women and 11.9% of men aged 15 to 49. Note that 94 cm is the Western cut-off for men. Under the Indian 90 cm line, more men would count.
In any case, the average is the wrong target. An average describes what is common, not what is healthy.
How to Measure Your Waist Correctly
NICE gives this method for measuring yourself:
- Find the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hip bones.
- Wrap a tape measure around your waist midway between these two points. This will be just above the belly button.
- Breathe out naturally, then take the reading.
A few practical tips:
- Use a non-stretch tape, held level all the way round, snug but not pressing into the skin.
- Measure on bare skin or a thin layer, standing relaxed, not sucking in.
- Measure in the morning, before a big meal, and use the same method each time.
- Do not use your jeans size. Many trousers sit lower than the true waist, and size labels are not tape measurements.
The Indian 2025 guidance describes a slightly different landmark, just above the top of the hip bone at the end of a normal breath out. Either is fine for tracking, as long as you always use the same one. For the ratio, measure your height without shoes against a wall or a stadiometer.

What Your Waist Does Not Tell You
A tape is a good screening tool, and it misses two things.
First, it cannot tell which fat sits under the tape. Fat just under the skin and visceral fat packed around the organs both add centimetres, but visceral fat carries more metabolic risk. Our post on visceral fat normal range covers how that is estimated.
Second, it says nothing about muscle. Two people with the same waist can have very different muscle and total body fat. A body composition test shows both; see our body fat percentage chart for Indians for the fat side and our post on muscle mass tests for the muscle side.
If your BMI looks normal but your waist is above the line, that pattern is common in India and is discussed in our thin-fat post. And if you are ready to bring the number down, our 12-week belly fat plan is the place to start.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a healthy waist size for Indian men?
Below 90 cm, which is about 35.4 inches, is the Indian cut-off used by the 2025 Indian obesity definition and the IDF’s South Asian values. Also aim to keep your waist below half your height. A taller man may still be under 90 cm but above half his height, so check both.
What is a healthy waist size for Indian women?
Below 80 cm, about 31.5 inches. Keeping your waist under half your height is a useful second check: for a woman of 5 ft 3 in, that is also about 80 cm.
Is a 34 waist fat for a woman?
A 34-inch waist is about 86 cm, which is above the 80 cm Indian cut-off for women and gives a waist-to-height ratio of about 0.54 at 5 ft 3 in. That is a sign of increased central fat, not a diagnosis. A doctor or a body composition test can tell you more.
What is a good waist-to-height ratio?
Between 0.40 and 0.49, according to NICE. From 0.50 the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure rises, and 0.60 or more is classed as high. The Indian 2025 guidance uses a cut-off above 0.5.
Is waist size more important than BMI?
They answer different questions. BMI reflects overall size; waist reflects fat around the middle. NICE advises using waist-to-height ratio as well as BMI for adults with a BMI under 35, and the Indian 2025 guidance uses both together.
Does waist size apply during pregnancy?
No. These cut-offs are for non-pregnant adults. During and soon after pregnancy, follow your doctor’s guidance rather than a waist chart.
Go Beyond the Tape
A tape tells you something is there. A body composition test tells you what it is: fat, muscle and an estimate of visceral fat on one sheet. Find an InBody test centre near you, or read what the InBody test measures.
